Japan Quake Animal Rescue - Dispatches from the Frontline #2

15 March 2011

Some photos of the mission AFN is on to the quake-and-tsunami-struck region of NE Japan.

The Animal Friends Niigata mission had to sleep in the car.

In Sendai, about which AFN writes:

We are at the Sendai district hall now where there are blankets in a pile and people charging their devices. People here very receptive and we have been told there is a local volunteer center and animal holding facility. Will go investigate now.

Later they sent via FB app for iPad:
The scenes we saw today were utterly devastating - we saw human bodies still being pulled out of rubble in tsunami struck area. No animal bodies however.

Elizabeth Gallaon-Aoki is an Italian/British citizen and longtime resident of Japan. She is the founder of the NPO Animal Friends Niigata (see English link)

Her work does NOT only involve animals in the Niigata (northwest Japan) area but nationwide.

She is now on the road and heading into the areas worst hit by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

Her mission is to find and rescue as many animals as she can and bring them to safety.

She needs help. Other groups are also helping in the efforts but this blog and chip-in account has been set up specifically to help her activities directly.

We will be updating her progress here. Please stay tuned for reports.

Your help is greatly appreciated.
