Japan Quake Animal Rescue - Dispatches from the Frontline #2
15 March 2011
Some photos of the mission AFN is on to the quake-and-tsunami-struck region of NE Japan.
We are at the Sendai district hall now where there are blankets in a pile and people charging their devices. People here very receptive and we have been told there is a local volunteer center and animal holding facility. Will go investigate now.
Some photos of the mission AFN is on to the quake-and-tsunami-struck region of NE Japan.
The Animal Friends Niigata mission had to sleep in the car.
In Sendai, about which AFN writes:
Later they sent via FB app for iPad:
The scenes we saw today were utterly devastating - we saw human bodies still being pulled out of rubble in tsunami struck area. No animal bodies however.
Elizabeth Gallaon-Aoki is an Italian/British citizen and longtime resident of Japan. She is the founder of the NPO Animal Friends Niigata (see English link)
http://bravenewclimate.com/2011/03/13/fukushima-simple-explanation/

Her work does NOT only involve animals in the Niigata (northwest Japan) area but nationwide.
She is now on the road and heading into the areas worst hit by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami in Japan.
Her mission is to find and rescue as many animals as she can and bring them to safety.
She needs help. Other groups are also helping in the efforts but this blog and chip-in account has been set up specifically to help her activities directly.
We will be updating her progress here. Please stay tuned for reports.
Your help is greatly appreciated.

Japan Quake Animal Rescue - Dispatches from the frontline
http://japandisasteranimalrescue.blogspot.com/2011/03/on-roadmarch-14.html
14 March 2011
Latest report: Isabella and her team of two struck out today moving eastward from Niigata Prefecture toward the Pacific coast of Japan, the area devastated by tsunami.
She is now in Yamagata Prefecture and having to spend the night in her car as all lodging is full.
She reported in from the lobby of a hotel that allowed her to access the Internet and was contacted by cell phone.
She says they are expecting the worst. "We may not be able to find any animals alive, but we are hopeful."
"The roads are packed with Miyagi Prefecture license plates, all people fleeing the quake area."
"There is no place to stay. We are camping in the car. It's cold, but we have some blankets," she said. Isabella has come down with a cold and went in search of medicine but no pharmacy was open and no one was allowed to sell her medicine. She was not put off. "I love the Japanese people. After they apologized to me profusely, explaining that they weren't allowed to sell medicine after-hours, one woman told me she had some cold medicine of her own and gave it to me."
A friend of ALL animals, Isabella said their first refugee may be, not a dog or cat. "Someone is leaving and we have been asked to take in a parrot!" she reported. They plan to pick up the bird tomorrow and continue onward in search of those in need.

Facebook entry from Nippon SPCA about their relief efforts
On March 13, we were finally able to get in touch with the shelter in Ibaraki and drove up there with rescue supplies. Because the freeway was closed, it took seven hours to get there, when it normaly takes less than two. As we had to return the rental car that same night and drop off the dogs that we brought back with us, we were wor...king against time. I have experianced being in an earthquake zone when I lived in LA, so I know well how people in a disaster area feel with no water no gas. There are some organizations who collect contributions from the government and distribute them later, but sometimes prompt action is needed in the event of an emargency, and aid supplies like warm food is more important than money. You need to have experience to go into disaster-stricken area as invasion by people who have no knowledge can be very dangerous. However, we believe that in some situations there are something we could do before waiting for aid from the government. Thus we try to continue to rescue pets. We just want you to know there are people, dogs and cats that have a chance of survival with your hearty support .3月13日茨城県のシェルターとやっとコンタクトが取れ、救援 物資を車載して行ってきました。
by akikofujimura

Lenny
It's a pic of Lenny. Lenny was a kitten I rescued last summer and put in a private shelter here in Japan. I knew if he stayed out on the streets, something like what happened to Brucie might well happen to him (Brucie was another adorable orange tabby who got clobbered by a car). Glad to see he is thriving. I just wish he could find a family.

Sheba on the pool steps.
Sheba, her brother Gus, and her 'follower', Buddy are wintering over by the swimming pool. Buddy got injured, probably fighting off some outside cat (he is the scrapper of this gang of three). I'm dosing him with anti-biotics for the nasty wound on his right front leg, and hope that no Feline Immune Deficiency Virus is involved (always a risk for outdoor cats). Here is an old photo of Sheba. She is a beauty.

Ebi one year on
Ebi went to her new family in January 2010 (when she was about 5 months old, but looked more like 3 months old because of under-development), and we got a photo from them early this year. She is doing well.

Where is Babe?
Babe settled into his new home in the US. He now lives with Elvis, Gracie and Biddie--oh, and the humans, Joe and Evan. But Babe found a place no one else can get to, his special spot. A bit like Superman in his Fortress of Solitude.

Maya Girl (former Swimming Pool Gang) with her friend, Shiro-kun
Maya Girl is the cat in the picture. She now spends a lot of time hanging out with Shiro-kun, the mixed Japanese dog (with a lot of Shiba breed in him). He is a very gentle dog and so MG has really taken to him. Since she misses her brother so much (Tiger Boy, killed by a car), it's good that she has a new 'guardian friend' like Shiro. MG has really adjusted well to life as a former campus feral turned house cat.

Photo retrospective of Caramel, one of the all-time favorite campus cats
Caramel, brother of Orange Blossom and son of Ragi-Mama, has been missing since late March this year. We have to assume the worst. We have searched much of Fukui City and found some cats that look a bit like Caramel, but no Caramel. It seems quite likely that Caramel left campus on the north side (he and Ragi-Mama did this frequently when there was a lot of noisy construction in their area) and was struck and killed by a car on a busy street, such as the Nishi-kanjo-sen street. He would have been especially vulnerable during the early morning hours, before rush hour, when people speed on the streets.
Here are some of our favorite photos of this wonderful cat. Looking at them you can see his character and why he was such a likable cat. Caramel always loved to pose for photos. We miss you guy! The last photo is of Orange Blossom (the orange tabby) with his brother in the summer of 2009.

Lil Sesame needs a home
Someone left a 3 month old kitten on the doorstep of one of the buildings of the College of Science. She is a lovely black-and-white (mostly black) kitten whom I have decided to re-name 'Sesame' (there was a note attached to the box saying what her previous name was, but I have decided that this name is bad luck and won't even tell you what it is). So now she is Sesame and she is ready to start a new life with a family who has the space and the heart to accept her as a member. She is healthy, playful, and uses the litter box diligently.
If you are interested and live somewhere near Fukui, Japan (we can drive quite a ways in most directions), let me know.
