  1. Thank you so much for all that you do for these kitties. I live in Okinawa, and there are so many stray cats. I feed around 10 just outside my apartment building. It is so sad. Yesterday, a lady from a neighboring building threw the food into the sewer and into the street. I can't see why she'd do such thing! I completely agree with you, Live and let live! Okinawans have a saying, once we meet we are brothers forever... Now if they could just extend that to animals on this island.

  2. Hi Kristin

Everytime it turns into winter here in Fukui, I really ENVY people who live in Okinawa. The JET Programme brought me to Fukui though, although that was 20 years ago.

I remember two stray dogs on Miyakojima (when I was on vacation). One was some sort of tiny chihuahua-terrier mix and his best friend was a golden retriever. They were so endearing because you could see they were the best of friends, trying to look out for each other. I do hope someone was trying to take care of them.

I notice also that there are lot of entries for Okinawa on the Satoyaboshu website (where people look for owners for cats and dogs). At least the weather helps some. The cold wet winters of Fukui take a toll on feral cats.

If it were possible, one of the best solutions is to get a 'trap-neuter/spay-release' (and hopefully 'maintain by feeding and aiding') program going in every neighborhood. The cats get to live out their lives in relative freedom, and the population doesn't increase. On campus I've got all the cats fixed, and they maintain territories (for feeding, sleeping) that keep the population relatively stable. The biggest problem is people dump kittens on campus, or the neighborhood cats breed and move in.

  3. One follow up--getting such a program going takes at least 3 people plus neighborhood cooperation--you might start at the local 'kominkan'/citizen hall as well as your schools. I'm more or less on my own here, and it has really taken a lot of time and work. It's way too much for one person to do, especially when people dump cats on campus.
