Small Shelters for Outdoor Cats

Photo: Another look at the weather-proof shelters. This one holds one cat. I have made ones that can hold two or three cats, with a double door that keeps out the cold air. It's more challenging to set them up in an area with no buildings. If you can put them on the leeward side of a building but in a secluded area, it provides the best shelter for cats. Most mixed domestic cats can withstand cold, but not the wet. They have to stay dry in winter.

  1. Cats like such shelters both while waiting for food and for sleeping, but ferals separate the functions if they can. They don't like to eat near where they sleep. I like to place these on the south or east side of buildings, to shelter them even more. If out in the open, I place one of those automobile trunk liners made from black foam rubber inverted, over the top, with cinder blocks weighting down the box. The entrance should face east or southeast.
