Maya Girl is the cat in the picture. She now spends a lot of time hanging out with Shiro-kun, the mixed Japanese dog (with a lot of Shiba breed in him). He is a very gentle dog and so MG has really taken to him. Since she misses her brother so much (Tiger Boy, killed by a car), it's good that she has a new 'guardian friend' like Shiro. MG has really adjusted well to life as a former campus feral turned house cat.

Photo retrospective of Caramel, one of the all-time favorite campus cats
Caramel, brother of Orange Blossom and son of Ragi-Mama, has been missing since late March this year. We have to assume the worst. We have searched much of Fukui City and found some cats that look a bit like Caramel, but no Caramel. It seems quite likely that Caramel left campus on the north side (he and Ragi-Mama did this frequently when there was a lot of noisy construction in their area) and was struck and killed by a car on a busy street, such as the Nishi-kanjo-sen street. He would have been especially vulnerable during the early morning hours, before rush hour, when people speed on the streets.
Here are some of our favorite photos of this wonderful cat. Looking at them you can see his character and why he was such a likable cat. Caramel always loved to pose for photos. We miss you guy! The last photo is of Orange Blossom (the orange tabby) with his brother in the summer of 2009.

Lil Sesame needs a home
Someone left a 3 month old kitten on the doorstep of one of the buildings of the College of Science. She is a lovely black-and-white (mostly black) kitten whom I have decided to re-name 'Sesame' (there was a note attached to the box saying what her previous name was, but I have decided that this name is bad luck and won't even tell you what it is). So now she is Sesame and she is ready to start a new life with a family who has the space and the heart to accept her as a member. She is healthy, playful, and uses the litter box diligently.

Shaun visits Buddy during the long, hot summer of 2010
Shaun (orange and white tabby on the right) can't get over the fact that Buddy isn't intimidated by him. Buddy is the smallest but most energetic 'guard' in the Swimming Pool Gang. He and Gus tolerate Shaun visiting (Shaun likes to take walks with me), but they remind him he is a visitor.
I actually think they like his visits because having a large cat like Shaun around does help the show of force against the marauding tom cats that come over the east wall of the campus. So they let Shaun come and even scent and scratch mark in their territory. He also takes meals there sometimes.
Sebastien makes progress
Sebastien is a lot healthier after the anti-biotics and anti-parasite medicine. He is eating heartily every day. The challenge for him is to find a safe and dry spot to get out of the nasty weather. And that weather has already started here in Fukui. If Sheba, Gus and Buddy--the Swimming Pool Gang--allow him into their circle, he should be all right this winter. The other day he and Buddy ate together. It had its tense moments, but no one tried to fight. So gradually Sebastien is becoming a full-time campus cat.
Pancho outside my apartment
If you like cats that mostly white with some grey, Pancho is a 'picture-perfect' cat. He has a very handsome face. He is also the boss of the territory outside my apartment, which helps Bootsie Mama and Tiger Baby to live in that territory relatively safely. Willie, a cousin, also comes for friendly visits.

Maya Girl, a campus vet, is now a happy housecat.
She even lives with a very nice dog, Shiro-kun. Maya Girl now seems very happy to be a housecat. I'm guessing the reason she ran away last spring was to verify whether or not Tiger Boy, her brother, was anywhere near the house. She and Tiger Boy grew up together on campus, but Tiger Boy was struck and killed by a car 2 years ago. Maya Girl--and Pushkin--never stopped looking for Tiger Boy, hoping to find him alive. Now that Maya Girl has satisfied herself that Tiger Boy is really gone, she is happy to be a housecat.
For the Swimming Pool Gang, it's a BLACK AND WHITE WORLD
And if Sebastien joins them, it will be even more so. In this collage are Sheba, Gus, and Buddy. Buddy is the all-black cat, and Sheba is the long-furred black-and-white. Sheba and Gus are sister-brother, and Buddy is a close cousin or half-brother (different litter, same mother quite likely).
Rest in peace dear little Brucie
Brucie was going to be rescued from living outside, but unfortunately, he was struck and killed in traffic last weekend. Brucie was a very friendly little orange tabby, so it's such a shame to lose him now, especially because someone had inquired about adopting him. He was supposed to be in a relatively safe place, but basically the lesson is: once outside, there is no real safe place. Brucie was killed on a backstreet, where people aren't supposed to be going fast, but some use it as a shortcut and speed anyway.
I'm sorry we couldn't protect you better Brucie. This year we have lost you, Caramel and Gwen to traffic when you deserved something far better than this.

Lenny, who lived just south of the campus
I made friends with Lenny in July. He would wait for me to come feed him on the edge of a parking lot south of campus. I took him off the streets because I thought he would make a good pet and to keep him from getting something serious, like feline AIDs, which affects to many ferals here in Japan. Fortunately, Animal Friends Niigata took him in and I hope he finds a family soon. He is a really nice looking orange tabby. He reminds me of a young Orange Blossom, our campus orange tabby.

Pongo and Babe, adopted brothers
This is a look back to 2009. I rescued Pongo, a small, sickly black-and-white kitten, in July 2009. Strangely enough, it was on the day I also found a lost dog who had nearly died from heat stroke and dehydration (and Pongo was himself badly dehydrated--it was a very hot day). I found the owner of the dog 3 days later, and Pongo spent a week in the hospital recovering.
Then Pongo became the favorite cat in the office. Everyone loved him and was giving him loving licks--Elvis, the long-haired brown tabby, Nana, the white calico, and Gracie, the long-haired calico.
Elvis and Gracie moved to the USA, but when I got back, every night I would hear the plaintive cry of a young cat over by the Dining Hall on campus. It turns out it was the little rascal, Babe, hiding behind the vending machines. I brought Babe inside (after getting him dewormed and vaccinated) and, after about a day of sizing each other up, Pongo and Babe decided they loved each other. Perhaps they recognized in each other feelings of abandonment and rescue.
Being a couple months older, Pongo was the boss, even as Babe outgrew him in size and strength. If Pongo happened to be losing in a wrestling match, he would grab Babe's big ears and bite just hard enough to make Babe give in.
Nana was the motherly (adopted mother) boss of the two little boys, but Nana found a family in October 2009. So Pongo and Babe spent even more time together once Nana was no longer around to mother them.
They became inseparable.
But, unfortunately, separate them I did, when Pongo was adopted into a family near campus. I had hoped they could take them both, but it's a large enough family in small enough house to make two cats impossible. I know Pongo is loved in that family and has become a regular member, but Babe misses him a lot. So Babe has taught me to play like a cat in order to make up for that--a bit anyway, as he still misses Babe so much.
I have to say repeatedly how these two little guys are the most affectionate and playful cats I have ever kept.

Update on Daisy
I have kept Daisy for two weeks. I wish I had better facilities for her. Right now she is sharing a room with Bigwig, the lame older cat I rescued 4 weeks ago. And since it has got so hot this summer, they spend most of their time in the only cool place in the empty house where they are--under the shower/bath unit, in a crawlspace that stays cool in the relentless heat. Thankfully Bigwig is a very nice-natured, neutered tom. I remember when Bigwig was still out on the street how nice he was to the kittens near the tennis court and on campus. He used to sit watchfully behind Tiger Baby and let him eat before he himself ate, and Bigwig would always 'shoo' Tiger Baby away from the road when a car came. He is being sweet like that to Daisy now.

Shaun said, "That's not how you mark a tree."
"Here. Let me show you. This is how you mark a tree. Other cats will think a leopard lives in this territory."
OB and Shaun sunbathing
This was earlier this summer, before it got really hot. Wish Caramel (OB's brother) was around to enjoy such times as well, but Caramel has been missing since about 1 April. OB is on the left; Shaun is on the right.

Sebastien
Here is a photo of Sebastien, on campus, near the No. 3 building of the College of Science. He is taking refuge from the sun and the heat. It's the first time I had ever seen Sebastien relax while the campus cats were near him. Perhaps he will get accepted by the Swimming Pool Gang afterall.
Babe pops his head out of his lair
This box is on top of a locker, near the window. He looks out at birds from here all the time. It's one of his favorite places to sleep and relax.
Babe is the computer's desktop image
Babe likes to sit next to the computer and feel the warm air coming out of it. He also likes to play with the keyboard.
Sheba looks 'ghostly' in this rainy season pic
Something about the lighting of the rainy season, it makes Sheba look very strange. She is a stunningly beautiful cat actually. And boss of the Swimming Pool Gang!
Meet Sebastien
Sebastien lives just off the southern edge of campus, but he is frequently on campus as well. I think he might be the father of one of my favorite cats of all time--Pongo (now named 'Tama'). I rescued Pongo near the gym, and Sebastien lives on that side of campus, just outside. His voice is very similar, as is his patchwork of black and white, including a little moustache.
I'm hoping he becomes a full-fledged member of the Swimming Pool Gang. He was ill this spring, and I kept him inside for about a week. But he escaped! Fortunately, it wasn't too far from his territory and he got back in a few days. Now he and Tonio (a large white-and-grey cat similar to Babe and Pancho in color) live on the east and south side of campus.

Tiger Baby posed for a nice portrait
He has such nice green eyes. He's a friendly little fellow. If I find a home for Babe soon, I would like to bring Tiger Baby inside and see if he can adapt to indoor living. He's very affectionate and naturally curious. For a complete feral, he is amazingly friendly to people once he knows that they are not cat haters. TB's nicknames include: Tiger Bubby, Tiger Booby, Tiger Bubski, and Lil Weasel.
Another look at Buddy
Maybe this is a better photo than the previous one. He is a friendly little fellow. I like the way he has been able to make friends with Sheba and Gus and become part of the Swimming Pool Gang. He really helps them hold the territory around the swimming pool.

Finally a look at Buddy
Buddy, an all-black cat of less than two years age, is the newest (fully accepted) member of the Swimming Pool Gang. That is a trio of cats right now--Sheba, Gus (her brother), and Buddy. Buddy has a lookalike brother, Richie, who is also black, but he doesn't usually stay on campus with the Swimming Pool Gang. He lives just off campus in the neighborhood near the swimming pool.
Interestingly enough, Sheba and Gus give every indication that they would accept Richie as a member too. When he visits the campus, they treat him like he belongs. However, they seem to be against Sebastien (a black-and-white male) and Tonio (a grey-and-white male) joining. I'm hoping they will relent before this winter so that everyone can stay out of the bad weather.

Someone dumped little Daisy on campus
I'm fairly sure that she has been dumped because a cat this sick doesn't usually take refuge under a car in the middle of a large parking lot on a scorching hot summer day. When I found her, she could barely move. Once she got out of the heat, she tried to sit up a little bit. She was severely dehydrated and couldn't drink water on her own, so I took her to the hospital right away--something that is hard to do in Japan on a Sunday. She is on IV drips and I await news. Anyway, I'm hoping she pulls through and her name is 'Daisy' now.
