MEET MEL--THE LATEST FCF RESCUE

Meet Mel. Mel got injured this weekend, so I caught him and took him to the vet. Will update on Monday. Mel is a lovely orange and white cat. He had been living as an indoor-outdoor cat, but the human in his life got ill and was forced to move into a nursing home, so Mel was abandoned.

You can't see him very well through the plastic case, but he is a very handsome orange and white. He was born around the same time as Babe and Sebastien, which puts him at three years this spring. I wonder if any of them are related to each other? Meet Mel. Mel got injured this weekend, so I caught him and took him to the vet. Will update on Monday. Mel is a lovely orange and white cat. Lady Babe (an abandoned cat, definitely not feral) adjusts to life in her new home

Lady Babe is a cat I rescued just outside my office. She had been living in the pump house of a broken-down fountain on campus. She was very close to starving to death when I found her.

Since she had a collar on (but no i.d. info.), I tho
ught she might be a lost kitty. So I took out ads in the newspapers, handed out handbills, and put up posters advertising a lost cat.

After 3 months and no inquiries, I put Lady Babe up for adoption. A family who had recently lost their 14 year old cat wanted Lady Babe. So she joined them right around New Year's.

I really fell in love with Lady Babe during the time she spent in my office (with little Bella, a female orange tabby kitten I had found ONE DAY AFTER LADY BABE). So it was a relief to get a message from the family telling me how well she had adjusted to her new life. Here is the photo.

Gus Joins Sheba and Buddy--the Swimming Pool Gang Moves Indoors

This week I moved Sheba (female black and white), Buddy (male all black), and Gus (male black and white) from the university to campus to indoor quarters. They are the last three of the permanent resident cats of the campus.

Gus (in the photo) was the last to let me catch him. Next, they need to go to the vet for shots and blood tests. Sheba and Buddy very quickly settled into indoor living, but Gus is still very upset about the change. They now reside in the same house as OB-kun, Ragi-mama, Shaun, Pancho, Bootsie-mama, and Tiger Baby.

It's that time of year again--kittens

One thing I learned: keep them warm before you do anything else. Second, feed them (letting them suckle) as they would at their mother's side. Don't tilt them back like a human baby--you can literally drown them in milk or give them pneumonia this way.

Trying to help FIV and FeLV cats lead healthier lives

I have started to supplement Sebastien's diet with these in hopes to counter the FIV he has. Elvis, another FIV cat, is apparently in complete remission--no active symptoms. Sebastien has some days where he seems in completely good health, but other days where he has a lot of nasal congestion and coughing. The mouth infections have been eliminated, and he is quite active at cleaning himself now (with the sores in his mouth, he had a hard time before). Overall, for the last year, he has had good appetite and good litter box habits, so he has taken well to life indoors. I plan to get OB and Shaun, the FeLV cats, going on these too.
Pet-Tinic is a liquid vitamin and mineral supplement.

Immugen is a compound of vitamins, minerals and herbs that are supposed to boost immunity.

Felisyl is one (of the many) brands of L-Lysine, an amino acid that is supposed to have an anti-viral effect.

Sebastien, FIV+ cat, is having a healthy and happy life, but he does have more health issues to deal with everyday.

FIRST TNR OF 2012

Well, we caught Nana at the park, and she is on her way to be spayed. She was 'trap wary',  but the smelly pink fish sausage proved irresistible.

Hard action, late winter, the Swimming Pool Gang

Sheba (left, leader of the Swimming Pool Gang) says,
"Dig in boys, we have to soldier hard tonight."

Lt. Gus checks out an abandoned enemy position
on the southern part of the perimeter. No sign of him.

Lt Buddy says, "OK Captain Sheba, I'm off to take a concealed
position on the eastern side. I'll be there ready for rapid ambush if you need me."

Captain Sheba and Lt Gus observe from cover on the western flank.

The enemy shows his face, and the Swimming Pool Gang tense for action.

Before Captain Sheba can say, "Lt. Gus (after all you are my brother) be careful,"
Gus salutes (with his tail) and is off to attack, his blood still up, his
whole body still smarting from the wound on his head from yesterday's fight.

The enemy cat saw both Gus and Buddy moving towards him and decided to leave
the field of action, over the east wall of campus and into the shadows of the
neighborhood beyond. Meanwhile, Sheba and Gus consolidate a more forward
position--the smoking shelter that oversees the main avenue of approach and wait.
