福井大学がキャンパス内の猫の世話を禁止、猫たちの未来は
http://jp.globalvoicesonline.org/2015/05/30/36437/
その名も「To University of Fukui: Stop starving the cats who live on campus 福井大学に対する嘆願書:キャンパス内の猫を飢えさせるのは止めてください!」、4月24日の時点で2,300以上の署名が集まっている。

To University of Fukui: Stop starving the cats who live on campus. 福井大学に対する嘆願書:キャンパス内の猫を飢えさせるのは止めてください!
Why this is important
Starving the cats is not a humane solution to the issue of cats on campus. It is not even a solution. The solution is to allow and cooperate with the volunteers who want to finish spaying and neutering the cats. Then the cats can be properly fed and cared for. The ones who are suitable can be adopted. The others will live out their lives and actually keep new cats away from campus.
Additional background explanation:
I am an associate professor at the University of Fukui, Fukui City, Japan. The Bunkyo Campus of the university has a small colony of cats on it. I estimate that there are now 12 cats living on campus. Most were born here, but strays and abandoned cats have added to the population.
From three years ago, some people at the College of Engineering were feeding a family of cats in that part of the campus (the southwest corner). But they were not doing spaying or neutering. So the population quickly grew to over 10 cats.
For the past 6 months, I have been spaying and neutering all the cats on campus and also at a near-by colony just southeast of campus. There are still 3 cats that need to be spayed or neutered.
However, the university opposes my activities. They are ordering me to stop feeding, spaying, neutering, everything.
Their proposed solution to the issue is that the cats should starve.
This is not a solution. The solution is to complete the spaying and neutering, find homes for those that are adoptable, and maintain a healthy population on campus. The cats that remain will keep new cats from coming onto campus. Many students and members of the faculty like the cats and enjoy seeing them on campus. Some would volunteer to help take care of the cats if the university administration would approve.

Remembering OB, Caramel and Tiger Boy.
Now
that it is spring, I'm really missing these three brothers. All three
were born on the campus of University of Fukui. Tiger Boy lived only one
year before being killed by a car. Caramel lived five years on campus
and succumbed to what I think was rat poison (information I only later
got from someone who saw him while he was stricken). I brought in the
surviving brother, OB, but he passed away from
illness on 1 January this year. They are survived by their sister, Maya
Girl, whom I found a home for, their mother, Ragi-mama, who lives in my
'cat sanctuary', and Bigwig, their father, who is at Animal Friends
Niigata shelter.
I really miss these three handsome guys. Every time I walk across campus I wish they would come jumping out of the bushes to startle me and ask me to play.

OB-kun 2005-2013
We had to say good-bye to a campus favorite, OB-kun, a lovely orange tabby. He joins his brothers Caramel and Tiger Boy across the Rainbow Bridge. He is survived by his mother Ragi-mama, his sister, Maya Girl, and (in the second photo), his cousin Shaun.

Here is Ricky
Ricky was rescued after Mel but before Ricky and Tama. He is FIV+ but very tame and right now in good health. He has an excellent appetite.
Meet Tama-chan, the latest rescue

Tama
has joined Sebastien and Cliff in the office, at least for now. She is
much better than last week, when she was caught and taken to the
hospital. She had to have a bad tooth extracted, but her mouth has been
treated and she can eat well now. She is a bit nervous in her new home,
but she is tame and let me pet her. She is FIV+ but has good appetite. She needs to rest and get a nutritious diet to build up her strength.

MEET CLIFF (WAS LILLY)
CLIFF
When he was found, this was the note I wrote:
---------------------------------------------------------------
This is Cliff, the new rescue. He was emaciated and yesterday was dehydrated as well. He also appears to have been injured on her face--perhaps hit by a car. He got some injections and an IV drip yesterday, and today he has been eating a lot of food--canned food that is high in nutrition and water--and resting in this cage (but he can enter and leave the cage as he wants, to visit the litter box or his food and water). Thanks go to Galina Hristoskova Shimo of the University of Fukui for finding him (on the south boundary of campus).

The photos below are of Cliff five months later, all healthy.

Weatherproof and warm cat shelters from storage chests.
How Sheba, Gus, Buddy
and Willy survived a long, cold winter (and Tonio and Richie too). These
really work well. This type of chest keeps them dry, and the carpet
tile lining and Styrofoam keep them warm. These are camouflaged so as not to draw attention to them. When up against buildings, I can also paint them the color of the buildings--such as sand color. The ones in back of this building have been painted to match the color of the building.

Mel: OK, now that I'm out I might as well eat dinner.
Mel,
the latest rescue, is an orange-and-white male about 3 years old. His
injured left front leg has about healed and he is limping only a little
now. Good eating habits. Good litter habits. Starting to groom now too.
He will go back to the vet after the Golden Week holidays for neutering,
vaccination and FIV/FeLV diagnostic.

Some 'furniture' for the cats at the house
I plan to buy
'climbing towers' for all three groups of cats at the house--so one for
OB-kun, Shaun and Ragi-mama, another for Sheba, Gus and Buddy, and a
third one for Bootsie-mama, Pancho and Tiger Baby. But until then, the
cats enjoy climbing on, sleeping and hiding in, and scratching away at
these homemade cardboard box things.
MEET MEL--THE LATEST FCF RESCUE
Meet Mel. Mel got injured this weekend, so I caught him and took him to the vet. Will update on Monday. Mel is a lovely orange and white cat. He had been living as an indoor-outdoor cat, but the human in his life got ill and was forced to move into a nursing home, so Mel was abandoned.
You can't see him very well through the plastic case, but he is a very handsome orange and white. He was born around the same time as Babe and Sebastien, which puts him at three years this spring. I wonder if any of them are related to each other? Meet Mel. Mel got injured this weekend, so I caught him and took him to the vet. Will update on Monday. Mel is a lovely orange and white cat.
