Cats like such shelters both while waiting for food and for sleeping, but ferals separate the functions if they can. They don't like to eat near where they sleep. I like to place these on the south or east side of buildings, to shelter them even more. If out in the open, I place one of those automobile trunk liners made from black foam rubber inverted, over the top, with cinder blocks weighting down the box. The entrance should face east or southeast.
